Backup Fails on Notebook

I’ve just spent several hours trying to rectify an issue with backing up my Notebook, a Lenovo X1.

I use Acronis True Image 2015 on my desktop machine and have never had an issue.  As I have a 3 PC licence, I wanted to backup my entire disk before performing the Windows 10 upgrade.  I installed the software on the Lenovo and attempted to perform an Entire PC backup to an external HDD on USB 3.0.

The progress bar made it’s way to 339.9MB and stopped, the program hung, and the only way I could stop it was to end the task through task manager (along with the other Acronis processes).  I tried this several times with different options even getting down to attempting to backup a single folder on to the same machine, with no luck.

I finally came across an Acronis KB item that suggested changing the settings on the services

  • Volume Shadow Copy, and
  • Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider

I changed these services to Automatic startup, rebooted the machine and tried again.  Still no joy.

I finally decided to disable these two services and I was finally able to backup.

According to Microsoft…

The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service manages software-based shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service. A shadow copy enables you to create a copy (or apparent copy) of a disk volume that represents a consistent read-only point in time for that volume. This point in time then stays constant and allows an application (such as Backup) to copy data from the shadow copy to tape.

Seems as though Acronis and Microsoft would disagree on this point!

Hope this helps any others experiencing the same problem.

Craig.
